Our Story

The history of this project reflects a decade-long evolution of a simple idea—improving health through better hydration—into a sophisticated technological ecosystem. Established in 2014 by a group of graduates from the University of Minnesota, the initiative was born from a personal realization regarding the widespread and often overlooked issue of dehydration. What began as a rapid prototype during a 54-hour hackathon has since transformed into a leader in the wellness technology space, focusing on the intersection of human behavior and smart design.

The progression of the technology highlights a persistent commitment to accuracy and user engagement through several distinct phases:

Early Conceptualization and Development

The initial vision was tested during a startup event where the team built a functional container that used a flow-based measurement system. This early design relied on a meter to calculate consumption, transmitting data to a mobile app via Bluetooth. While it proved the concept was viable, it faced technical hurdles; low-volume sips were difficult to track accurately, and the mechanical requirements of the flow meter limited the bottle to specific lid styles. Participation in an accelerator program allowed the team to refine the product, moving away from flow meters toward sensor-based detection that offered greater reliability and design flexibility.

Refinement of the Notification System

As the product matured, the focus shifted toward making reminders more effective yet non-intrusive. Early models featured a distinctive exterior and a sensor stick that detected water levels, using a gentle pulsing light to prompt the user. Feedback from early users led to more visible and dynamic alerts. The evolution of these notifications saw a transition from simple white lights to vibrant, multi-colored LED patterns that could be customized to fit an individual’s style, ensuring that the prompts remained noticeable throughout a busy day.

Technological Breakthroughs and Hardware Evolution

A significant turning point occurred with the introduction of a weight-based sensing method. Unlike earlier sensors that could struggle with internal obstructions or temperature variations, this new approach utilized a sensor located at the base to measure the bottle’s weight. This shift provided several key advantages:

  • Temperature Versatility: The system became compatible with vacuum-insulated stainless steel, allowing users to track their intake of ice-cold water.
  • Accuracy: By measuring the total mass of the container, the device could precisely calculate consumption regardless of how quickly or slowly a person drank.
  • Power Efficiency: Later iterations introduced rechargeable components and optimized battery life, making the system more sustainable for long-term daily use.

Integration and Holistic Health

Modern advancements have expanded the scope of the project to include deep integration with the broader digital health landscape. The connected application now calculates personalized hydration goals by analyzing various factors such as local weather, altitude, activity levels, and individual biological data. Furthermore, the technology has found utility beyond personal wellness, supporting clinical research and being utilized in professional environments to monitor hydration with medical-grade precision.

Throughout this journey, the core philosophy has remained unchanged: leveraging innovation to turn a healthy habit into an intuitive and enjoyable part of everyday life. By continuously reexamining every component—from the ergonomics of the grip to the frequency of the alerts—the team has created a solution that balances technical sophistication with the simple, essential need for water.
